In a op-ed in Science, Paul calls for philanthropists, governments, universities, and private companies to invest more in basic science and in the scientists willing to pursue approaches at the very edges of knowledge.

The complexity of biology is a fascinating challenge, and I am keen to see the field deconstruct its mysteries, establish reliable and predictive models, and put that knowledge to work. Such innovative and creative work drives human progress, and it is this belief that fuels my ongoing support for basic science.

The article followed his creation of the Frontiers Group to explore the landscape of science to identify and invest in pioneers with ideas that will create new knowledge and make the world better.
